Buying a plate

Find a plate, agree a price, pay the seller directly, then complete the DVLA transfer. CarTrait provides structure, messaging, and guidance — not payment processing.

Step 1 – Find a plate & agree a price

Browse listings or search for a specific registration, then:

  • Make an offer and negotiate in messages, or
  • Buy at the listed price if the seller enables it.

Once agreed, confirm the exact price, what’s included (V750/V778 if relevant), and target timeline.

Step 2 – Agree payment method (direct)

Payment is made directly to the seller using your preferred method (for example bank transfer, invoice link, or in-person).

CarTrait does not handle funds. Always agree the method and confirm identity before sending money.

Step 3 – Complete the DVLA transfer

Most transfers happen in one of two ways:

  • Online assignment via DVLA if the plate is on a vehicle.
  • Retention certificate transfer (V750/V778) if held on retention.

CarTrait guides both sides with a simple checklist so nothing gets missed.

Step 4 – Confirm & close the deal

Once DVLA updates (or the certificate is received), mark the deal as completed. The listing is closed and messages remain saved for reference.

Selling a plate

List your plate, handle offers, take payment directly, then follow DVLA transfer steps. CarTrait helps you look credible with verification and a clean workflow.

Step 1 – List your plate

  • Set a price and decide if you accept offers.
  • Add details that improve trust (format, retention status, notes).
  • Your listing appears on the marketplace with its own plate page.

Step 2 – Verify ownership (recommended)

Verified listings build confidence. Add proof (certificate/vehicle + a verification code) to earn a Verified badge.

Step 3 – Receive offers & agree terms

  • Accept, counter, or decline offers in messages.
  • Agree price, DVLA route (assignment vs retention), and timeframe.

Step 4 – Take payment directly

You collect payment using your preferred method. We recommend agreeing it clearly in messages and confirming funds are received/cleared before starting transfer steps.

CarTrait does not handle funds and is not a payment intermediary.

Step 5 – Complete DVLA transfer & mark sold

Follow the DVLA route that matches how the plate is held. Once DVLA updates (or the certificate is transferred), mark the listing as sold and keep the conversation for your records.

Payments are direct

CarTrait doesn’t take payments or hold funds. Buyer and seller agree the method and complete payment independently. We provide messaging, verification, and DVLA guidance to make the process smoother.

DVLA transfer basics

Transfers vary depending on whether the plate is assigned to a vehicle or held on retention. CarTrait provides guidance, but DVLA remains the source of truth.

If the plate is on a vehicle

Usually transferred via DVLA’s online assignment service. The seller typically needs the right details and the transfer must be allowed by DVLA rules.

If the plate is on retention

Transfer involves the V750/V778 certificate route (and DVLA’s instructions for changing nominee/keeper). Agree who’s responsible for any DVLA admin fees if applicable.

Timelines

Some transfers reflect quickly online; others can take longer depending on DVLA route. Agree expectations up front and keep updates in messages.

Safety tips

We improve trust with verification and structured messaging — but you should still follow sensible precautions when paying directly.

Best practices

  • Prefer verified listings when possible
  • Keep agreements in writing inside CarTrait messages
  • Confirm seller identity and plate status (vehicle vs retention)
  • Don’t rush — scammers rely on pressure
